Health Before Wealth

In 2013 I took on the challenge to finally get my health in order. “Health before Wealth” was something I had never considered. Well, by the end of the year I had lost over 100 pounds, got off insulin and have put my sleep apnea machine away.

Before & After

Before & After

One Day At A Time

It was difficult but, I took it one day at a time. When I worked at Day & Ross they had a saying, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it”. This was what got me through my weight loss. I measured and recorded my weight and blood sugar every morning. Being Italian, pasta and bread are as natural as air and water. Cutting that out of my diet was the hardest thing to do. Exercise was another thing that I wasn’t big on (no pun intended), but regular exercise became part of my every day routine. Combining diet and exercise, I knew if I stayed on track my numbers would go down, but if I had fallen off the wagon, my results were going to show it.

Sustaining Motivation is Key

My success came from getting over the bad days and concentrating on getting back on the plan. While on this journey, I heard many motivating sayings. The one I like the best was, “It’s easier to lose 5 pounds 10 times than to lose 50 pounds once”. Short term targets will keep you motivated. You need to have a plan and keep to it. If you have a setback, get over it and get back on plan. In health and in business, your goals should be measurable and attainable.

The Next Chapter

As I begin this next chapter of my life, I wanted to reach out to my friends and colleagues and share information and maybe inspire someone to achieve that goal that has eluded them. Be it health or wealth, you need to stay focused. We are human, things happen. Let me conclude with another saying “Build a bridge and get over it”. Success is based on how we react to adversity.
